Latest News

10/9/09 - Hockey is the iTunes free video of the week. Yayyy!

10/9/09 - I made my debut as a dancer in my pal Keith Schofield's video for Justice and Lenny Kravitz! In fact, so did my wife, and pretty much most of my friends. Go Keith!

10/5/09 - Guess who's really bad at updating the news on their site. ME!! Sorry kids, I'm sure you've all been just sick waiting for the latest and greatest from yours truly. Just one of those things that keeps getting bumped lower and lower down the To-Do list. I'm planning on putting together a more comprehensive "what I did this summer (and spring and some of fall)" report, but in the meanwhile, check out this cool flyer. It's for an event called Tarfest and it's put on by my pals at Ab5trax AKA A Common Threat. They showed the video that we collaborated on (with the tasty artwork of the lovely and talented James Gulliver Hancock) for the even lovlier Lenka.

2/05/09 - Did a little interview on Flavorpill's Flavorwire

12/14/08 - I've uploaded the Fray video, but it's abnormally large. Which is nice if you have a fast internet connection. I'll try to compress a smaller version when I get back to Los Angeles. (I'm in Denver for Christmas. Yay!)

12/14/08 - The Fray video for "You Found Me" has been released. Look for it on VH1 and MTV. I've also heard rumors that it's going to play on ABC during New Years Eve. This was a massive undertaking and I'm really proud of everyone involved.

Produced through Ghost Town Media by Justin Benoliel and photographed by Shawn Kim.

12/07/08 - This Friday, the Metro Station "Seventeen Forever" video premiered on FNMTV. Another Pete Wentz hosted affair. Pretty neato. What's weirder is that I saw a poster for the premiere when I was in New York last week. So bizarre.

This is the sort of thing a professional director does at 3:40am.

10/16/08 - Hey everybody. I've finally emerged from a four month absence of updates. That's simply terrible. The good news is, I've been working on a lot of amazing projects (amazing because I've been given the opportunity to work on them, not necessarily because I'm involved with them).

I have a bunch of stuff that I need to post here, and I'll do it as soon as I get a chance to breathe between writing treatments for new stuff and catching up on laundry and sleep.

The Ingrid Michaelson video has been done for a while, and I'm going to post it as soon as I'm allowed. I personally think it's pretty adorable, and you might too.

I also finally finished my video for Liz Pappademas. If you haven't seen her perform, please do, she's a treat and a half, and an all around wonderful person. I'm really proud of the video, too. Not only because we made it for about a hundred bucks, but it seems to really strike an emotional chord (of course, that's 90 percent due to Liz and her incredible song). Here are a couple live performances she did for some cool website:

I also shot a video for the Fray, which was amazing. We shot the video in Chicago, and it was simply one of the greatest experiences of my life. We encountered a lot of insane obstacles, and it was probably the most difficult video I've ever made, but we did it and it's looking great. I just came out of the color session with the amazing telecine artist Paul Bronkar tonight and it looks spectacular.

I also finished shooting my third Metro Station video. I'll have pics up soon.

On a very sad note, my wife's older brother passed away a couple months ago. His name was Artie. He was a pretty troubled guy and died from a drug overdose. Not sure what else to say, but it happened and has been pretty awful for all of us.

I feel like there's been a lot more news to update, but it's 4 in the morning and I should really be asleep.

Metro Station - behind the scenes of "Control" (altpress.com exclusive) from Alternative Press on Vimeo.

3/3/08 - If you haven't seen these guy's film reviews, you're missing out. This couple is so precious to me. I can only hope to be that hip when I'm 80.

2/28/08 - Hey everybody. First off, I'd like to wish my wifey a happy birthday.

For the record, that's not my wife in the picture...that's Liz Pappademas I recently shot a video for her. Here's her myspace

Secondly, I wanted to run you all through an update on what I've been up to lately.

It's been a whirlwind of a few months... where to begin...?

I think the most recent video to be completed is for Metro Station's "Control". These are a great bunch of rabble-rousing gents, so what better than to attempt to capture a night of pure enthusiasm and wildness. This was a blast to shoot. If you're ever at a loss for a video concept, there's really no match for a food fight or a slip-n-slide. Here's a compressed version from the good folks at Buzznet.com until I can put up a proper version:

. (There's much more news to fill you in on, I did two videos this week, one for THE MYRIAD and another for SWITCHES. They're both going to be really amazing, I think. By far my best to date.

Okay... I gotta lay down...I'm really really really tired right now, and am coming down with a cold.)

2/12/08 - Shepard Fairey has printed a bunch of these posters. I really want to buy one, but I'm poor. It's pretty amazing. Can any of you remember the last time that there was this much excitement about a candidate? Could you imagine the sensation of not only liking your president, but admiring him?

Can we make that happen? Yes we can.

2/11/07 - I'm getting really consumed with prepping, writing, editing, delegating and researching and somehow this video popped into my head. I didn't shoot this video, but I wish I had. It's Jonah Matranga, AKA Onelinedrawing singing "Livin' Small" at a house party. Jonah has to be one of the most amazing people I've ever had the chance to meet, and an equally amazing performer. Last year, my friend Dave surprised everyone by bringing Jonah out to Pennsylvania to perform. It was easily the most beautiful night of music in my life. Anyway, everything about this video is perfect, and really speaks to me right now. As these videos get bigger, and my beard sprouts more gray hairs, it's good to be reminded of why I'm doing.

2/07/07 - The "Love Song" video for Sara Bareilles is almost at 3,000,000 hits! Do your part and head over to youtube.com. I'm too lazy to put in an HTML hyperlink, so just do a search. You'll be glad you did. Okay...I'll be glad that you did.

Now if only there was a way that I could get a percentage of those hits. Mmmm.

1/25/08 - Just found this picture from the Sara Bareilles video. He rules.

1/24/08 - Okay, kids. Time for a proper update. Or as proper as it gets around here. First off, I want to wish you all a happy New Year. I know I'm 24 days late, but in this life blessings can be few so take 'em when you can get 'em.

The first big piece of news is that I'm now represented by United Talent Agency for movies and TV and stuff. If you want me to make a movie or TV show for you, call 310.273.6700 and ask for Yuli

I have a bunch of videos shot, that are in various stages of editing, animating, and general video-love-making.

One is for Salvador Santana (yes, Carlos's son). It should be a lot of fun. I'm working again with my pal Max Miceli as well as the very talented animation studio, Walter Robot.

Another video in the hopper is for DJ Sharam featuring Daniel Bedingfield. This project I've teamed up with the animation wizards at Ghost Town Media, and so far it's looking stunning.

My video for Nicole Atkins is going to be colored tonight and should be up on the site any day, now. For that one, I worked with the insanely amazing circus troupe, Lucent Dossier.

Oh yes, and the video for Ingrid Michaelson is finished, and has been for a while but I can't post it on the site yet. The video was made for Grey's Anatomy, and I'm not supposed to post it until it airs, and since the writers are on strike, there's no saying when it'll be up.

In future news, I'm shooting half of a video for the lovely and talented Liz Pappademas this Saturday. The other half will be shot in San Francisco as the video and song revolve around the '89 earthquake.

There are some more videos on the horizon and a few commercial projects in the worls. Keep checking back, as those new videos could be up here any day now.

01/16/08 - I'm going to give a proper update on what the hell I've been up to, but I wanted to mention that I just saw that the Sara Bareilles video is on TRL. It also has a million and a half views on Youtube. What does that mean, kids? It means if you want people to see your video, have me make it. Oh yeah, and write the world's catchiest song.

01/15/08 - Ladies and gentlemen, I've traveled over half our state to get here this evening. I couldn't get away sooner because my new well was coming in at Coyote Hills and I had to see about it with my good friend and pop star, Sara Bareilles.

1/09/08 - Happy new year kids. Perhaps you've noticed that I hadn't posted anything in the month of December. That's because my plate was full of music video goodness. I'm going to cook up a nice little update very soon. I just wanted you all to know that I've been working very hard to bring more tidbits of music video goodness to the world.

In the meanwhile, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, mahalo and le chaim!

11/30/07 - Hey kids, did you know that Winch+Pulley is just one guy? Josh Forbes. Me. Apparently that's been a source of confusion.

Now, does that mean that I do all the animation, or prop building, or makeup, or cinematography, or editing? Not necessarily. I feel that one of the keys to good directing is surrounding yourself with people a lot more talented than yourself. If it works for George Bush, it should work for me.

Anyway, I just wanted to clear that up.

Oh yeah, and if you want to get in touch with me about a project, the proper way to do it is to send it to my management. I'm a bigshot now and I don't have time to answer all truckloads of fan mail and appeals for my genius. If you want my services, the most efficient way is to contact:

LANETTE PHILLIPS MANAGEMENT

11/15/07 - My editor, Nate Pence just informed me that my ladies are numbers 1 and 2 on Vh1's "You Oughta Know" list. They're up there with Feist which is pretty freaking awesome.

Officially, the listing for Ingrid is because of her precious rodeo clown video directed by the ever talented Autumn DeWilde, but I can only hope that it whets people's appetites for the main course, our video for "Keep Breathing".

On that note, the "Keep Breathing" video is edited and colored and all ready to send out to Grey's Anatomy and will be up on the site very very soon!

11/2/07 - I was up editing 'til two last night on our fantastic, new video for the lovely Ingrid Michaelson. It's looking really beautiful. I don't think I've made anything that could make people cry, so this one might be a first.

So, anyway, here's a picture of myself and Ingrid. It was shot by Deborah Lopez, who not only is an incredible photographer, but she also did Ingrid's hair and makeup.

10/18/07 - The Sara Bareilles video is up and ready for your eyeballs. WATCH IT HERE!

10/15/07 - Division Day was added to Fuse TV's "The Worm". I'm not sure what that means exactly, but Aesop Rock and Okkervil River are in the mix, so that's cozy company to keep. I'm not sure what the benefit of your clicking on it, but it's better to be safe than sorry. So get over to Fuse. Everybody knows the best way to watch videos is with shitty compression after watching bullshit "Go Army!" propaganda. The Worm

10/9/07 - Here's a picture of Ingrid from the set of the video. She looks like a movie star. Also, I just found out that the Sara Bareilles video is going to be featured on VH1's "You Oughta Know". Which apparently is really awesome. (I'm so out of the loop when it comes to things that normal people watch. If they told me that the video was going to play in the background of Doctor Who, I'd soil myself.)

10/8/07 - We just shot a video for one of the three sweetest, most beautiful and talented solo artists I've ever worked with, Ingrid Michaelson. We staged a big, semi-surreal bingo game and it was amazing. Stay tuned, kiddos.

9/26/09
I directed this sweet video for Jenny Owen Youngs. You need to see it and tell your friends. Perez Hilton blogged it and it already has 17,000 hits in 14 hours. I need MORE!!! I'm like the cookie monster of viral videos. ME WANT HITS!!

9/24/07 - Here are some stills from the video. We just came out of telecine. The Sara Bareilles video is looking mighty purdy.

9/23/07 - oh boy. I just shot a really amazing video for Sara Bareilles. Yowzers am I tired. More details to come. Also, I finished the Jenny Owen Youngs video as well as the Division Day "Tigers" video. I'm going to post them both very soon.

8/09/07 - This is Michael Hsiung. He was one of our many dutiful tigers on our Division Day video. This picture and the last are the start of a photo series I should start of tired-ass people in costumes on my video sets. (Not much of an audience for that, I understand, but commercial gain was never much of a motivating factor for my ideas unfortunately.)

8/09/07 - I just realized that I wrote the wrong date down below. Should be 8/7/07. I was too excited about the possibility of it being 777. I guess I missed out on it.

Here's a picture of the great painter, dancer, sasquatch, renaissance man, Tim McMullen. You can see his work at timmcmullen.blogspot.com

I'm going to post more pictures soon.

7/07/07 - Here's another of Jenny. Doesn't she look just adorable in that yellow dress? Gawrsh.

7/7/07 - Jenny's pictures had a weird blurpybop on 'em so here's another one, blurpybop-free!

7/7/07 - Hey gang. So a lot of things have gone down since we last talked. First, I just wrapped on two videos in four days. A definite first for me. I'm still feeling the burn. The other news is that I have recently left Factory Features to journey forth on my own in search of adventure and production staff. Should be a good thing. I'm excited.

6/15/07 - Check out what my pal Matt Rubin over at Virb.com did:

6/14/07 - The Great Northern "Home" video is now up at yahoo.com. Get on there and vote!CLICK HERE!!!

6/08/07 - There's been a little delay. Looks like we're working out a deal to premiere the Great Northern in style. Hang tight kids. It's worth the wait!

6/07/07 - GOOD NEWS! THE GREAT NORTHERN VIDEO IS NOW ON OUR VIDEOS PAGE! The bad news is that you need the latest version of Quicktime to view it. Check it out, and if it doesn't work, do yourself a solid and click on the little quicktime thingy. I'm working on putting up one for normal people, but since I'm retarded with computers, it's gonna take a lil time.

6/5/07 - We've been rendering like crazy, and today is the day. The Great Northern video should be up soon. Just you wait, kids, just you wait.

5/17/07 - I'm nursing a hangover after last night's MVPA awards. Open bar and my liver are not on the best terms right now. Plus the man, the myth, the legend, Wayne Isham threw a little bash afterward. That guy is really remarkable. Love him or hate him you can't deny his status as a massive pioneer in the music video world.

4/26/07 - Sea Wolf video ready to pounce. Our video for Sea Wolf is set to explode all over the big(ger) screen, debuting on MTV2's Subterranean. Here's a blurb from their blorb:

4/18/07 - Oh. Hey. So we got the Acute video back up and running. I guess it's been up for a while I just needed to empty the cache in my Quicktime player. So if for some reason it isn't playing for you do that. If you're having trouble with that, email me at info@winchandpulley.com and we'll get you all straightened out. Thanks!

4/17/07 - For some unknown reason the Acute video hasn't been playing. We're talking to our web guy (as well as flogging ourselves for not understanding how computers work). It should be up soon.

3/26/07 - It's been a while since I've updated this puppy. Too much craziness to count since the beginning of the year. On a down note, my father passed away in January. It's been pretty devastating. On the upside, though, just yesterday we wrapped on a video for Great Northern. They are fantastically wonderful people and the video should be amazing. I'm working with motion graphics animator Matt Smithson of Man Vs Magnet who is a genuis. Also, I've signed with Factory Features for music videos so we'll see what awesomness that brings.

Dailey made me take the Santa Video off youtube. Something about having to pay people. It can now be viewed here: Santa Sessions Spread it!

12/19/06 We've been getting a pretty decent response on the Santa Sessions video, but I have a very hungry ego. So send all your friends the link. It's your civic holiday duty!

11/28/06 - the new Acute video is finally up but there's something wrong with it in its current state. For now you can see it in all it's glory at robbhoffman.com. He co-edited the video with Dave Garcia. As you can see, it was a beast to edit.
Damn this front page is ugly.
Don't worry, we'll fix it soon.

11/20/06 - We apparently are finalists in some sort of music video competition on Indie 103.1. Go to indie1031.com/video.php and vote.

11/15/06 - please bear with us. We're making the transition between relying on our web guy and actually updating this site ourselves. Our NEWEST videos are now in the music video section but for now they don't have pictures. Watch them and enjoy.

10/30/06 - holy crap we've been busy. Writing a lot of treatments, shooting videos, and wearing costumes. It's that time of year again. Also, we wrapped shooting a super rad video for the even super-er radder band Acute.

9/07/06 - Shot the BNL video over the weekend. Everything went swimmingly. We're planniing on having it out by the 15th. Stay tuned.

7/24/06 - It's official. We're doing a video for Barenakes Ladies. I'm super psyched. I was a huge BNL fan in high school, and they've always held a place in my heart. In fact, I even have an autographed box of macaroni and cheese that Ed had opened with his teeth and thrown out to the crowd at an in-store in Denver. If you're a fan, live in LA, and want to appear in the video, shoot us an email.

7/24/06 - a handfull of financial and technical issues later, we're on the cusp of completion on the Subs video. A few more days of FX and color correction and it'll be ready for public consumption.
Also the Cold War Kids video has been done for a while. We'll put that up soon. Our web guy got married and moved to the inland empire so things take longer than we'd like to update. If you know someone who designs websites for computer illiterates, send them our way.

6/23/06 - editing the Submarines video. Should be good to go in a week or so, depending on how intense our special effects are going to be.

5/23/06 - Just thought I'd take a break from working on our next video to tell you about it. We're diligently prepping the next Submarines video. Shoot date is set for June 10,11 and possibly the 12th. Our art department heroes James Anderson and Michelle Blade are rocking some sweet sets, but they need help. If you have any construction skills, or want to just help out, shoot us an email. We're building every day 'til the shoot date.

4/17/06 - Got word this weekend about two new videos that we'll be doing. We're super excited about both. One is for this really great indie-duo, The Submarines. The other is a surprise. I'll leak it out as soon as it's 100 percent.

2/27/06 - W&P on Myspace. We've actually been on Myspace for a while, but have neglected to tell anyone for fear of looking like dweebs. Be our friend!

2/24/06 - Video for Sea Wolf posted. If you haven't heard of this band, you will. Fronted by Alex Church of Irving fame, they make sublime, eerie, beautiful tunes. Like a more woodsy Elliot Smith. Special thanks to my production designer Michelle Blade (oragamibunny.com) for making everything look pretty, and for her amazing, handmade wolves.

2/20/06 - Irving videoup and ready for all to see! It's for the song "Situation" which is off their forthcoming album Death in the Garden Blood on the Flowers, available April 4th. The video was directed by Josh Forbes with art by Max Miceli and motion grapics by PJ Fidlerand his crew PROM.
Special thanks to Eenie Meenie Records.

12/14/05 - Winch & Pulley finish shooting with Sea Wolf. Heading into the studio for post production. Check back in a few weeks for the video

12/08/05 - Currently in post production with Irving.

12/06/05 - Welcome to the official launch of Winch & Pulley! Feel free to explore our site. Check in with us periodically to find out more about our latest projects.
